Aloha Kauai

The last few days of our trip to Kauai were busy. We visited the touristy Fern Grotto, ate lunch at a very questionable Hawaiian barbecue, did a little bit of shopping in Koloa, and spent a lot of time on the beach.

One highlight of the trip was a very romantic dinner with the hubby at Keoki’s Paradise in Koloa. Once at the restaurant, my wonderful husband surprised me with a beautiful lei! Something that has become a rare item in Hawaii unless you stay at a resort. I couldn’t help but wonder if all the locals were looking at us funny since I was one of only two people in the entire restaurant wearing one  (the other was my brother-in-law’s girlfriend). But, I really didn’t care. After all, it was television that taught me that every traveller to Hawaii receives a lei.

The best part of dinner was a little game that my husband and I like to play. One of our favorite shows on summer television is Master Chef, so naturally we have this idea that we know everything there is to know about food. We enjoyed tasting everything on both of our plates (well, he didn’t exactly try my seared Ahi, but that’s beyond the point) and criticizing it as if we had any idea of what we were talking about. It was perfect!

We spent the next days exploring beach after beach. The best was Gillin Beach (see previous post for picture), the family owned beach. We were lucky to spend two days there with family. It was a place where we could relax more than any other place. And when you’re on vacation with a 3-year-old and a 15-month-old relaxation is hard to find. I even found a chance to lay out in the sun and try and brown this white skin of mine.

Though the last day on the island was rainy, the day wasn’t lost. My hubby, his brother and his brother-in-law all got out into the water to snorkle (I had hoped to go, but totally freaked out at the last minute). Plus, we ate at a fabulous little burrito stand called Red Hot Mammas on the way to Tunnels Beach. I must say, if you are out there try this place. It’s fabulous (and rememeber, I know what I’m talking about when it comes to food…ha ha ha)!

On July 18th, we said good-bye to Kauai to embark on our next adventure. It was a great trip and my family will always remember it…well my husband and I will always remember it. I know we’ll look back at pictures and tell the boys all about their first trip to Kauai when they are older. What a great thing to look forward too! How lucky are we :)
